Why learn a foreign language?

Do you know that more than half of the population can speak more than one language fluently? Current estimations indicate that around 43% of people are bilingual, and 17% are multilingual.

Being bilingual means being able to speak two languages fluently while being multilingual means speaking more than two languages fluently.

Why learn a foreign language? Check out four common reasons to learn a new language:

(Common) Reasons to learn a foreign language

– 1. It boosts career opportunities
The workforce of the future is globalized and multicultural, requiring bilingual and even multilingual candidates. So, knowing a foreign language is crucial to boosting career opportunities in the home country and abroad.

– 2. It makes traveling more enriching
Another reason to learn a foreign language is to travel to other countries. However, more than simply visiting a place, knowing a new language creates deeper connections and understanding of the people and culture, enriching the traveling experiences.

– 3. It ups the fun
You can enjoy learning a new language, especially as you find out how people view the world differently. Dogs say “woof” in English, “wang wang” in Mandarin, and “guau” in Spanish. This is just the tip of the iceberg too. What do dogs say where you come from?

– 4. It lets you speak to more people
After all, the reason to learn a foreign language is to be able to communicate with more people. With English, you can speak to (almost) half the world! With Mandarin, you can communicate with more than a billion people worldwide. The Spanish language gets you an additional 420 million people.

(Uncommon) Reasons to learn a foreign language

On the other hand, some people have uncommon or even random reasons to learn a new language. We took to Reddit to find some not-so-common reasons to learn a language.

“I started studying Mandarin because the translation of a novel I was reading stopped, and I wanted to know what happened after.”

“I want to learn French just because some people say that it suits my appearance :D.”

“This probably isn’t all that weird, but I only learned Italian in order to read one specific author in the original language.”

“I momentarily picked up Russian because I liked hearing a drag queen I’m a fan of speak two sentences of it.”

“Not so weird but more just pathetic: I had a crush on a guy from Ireland, so I learned Irish to potentially impress him.”
